“Archaeology on the Mountain 2022”: anniversary of Hallstatt UNESCO World Heritage Site: shaped by salt – water – timber

The Natural History Museum (NHM) Vienna and the Hallstatt Salzwelten will present “Archaeology
on the Mountain 2022” on Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 September 2022, from 10:00 to 17:00 – an invitation to actively participate,
experiment and make discoveries. This year’s theme is the anniversary of the Hallstatt UNESCO World Heritage Site, shaped
by salt – water – timber.
2022 is a year of anniversaries: 50 years of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, 30 years
of ratification by Austria and 25 years of the Hallstatt/Dachstein World Heritage Site.
7,000 years of salt mining have created a unique countryside. The long history of salt mining and the unique development of crafts and culture have given rise to a cultural area like no other, thus providing the basis for designating this region as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 25 years ago. Salt – water – timber and craftsmanship have been defining elements of the Salzkammergut region for thousands of years.
Researchers of the NHM Vienna and their cooperation partners will present the latest results of their research regarding the world’s oldest salt mine and the burial ground that served as namesakes for a cultural age in human history, the Hallstatt Culture.

Presentation of research activities at various stands and stations at the “Alte Schmiede”, a branch of the NHM Vienna at the Salzberg in Hallstatt:
Delve into a past world of thousands of years ago and discover how researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, archaeozoology, botany, wood research, music archaeology, textile archaeology, history, molecular biology, ceramics research, restoration, archaeobotany, mining archaeology and geology, investigate prehistoric humans and their environment using state-of-the-art tools such as scanning electron microscopy or 3D scans and communicate their findings.
