Having taken the helm in the midst of the pandemic, the new management had set itself a big agenda, ranging from increased visibility for research and digital transformation to greening the building. The press conference will take stock of the situation and focus on the exciting development opportunities concerning visitors, as well as the collections and research activities, as they were identified in the context of a large-scale, participatory feasibility study on possible structural changes conducted in 2022. The measures involve improvements in terms of accessibility as well as safe storage for the collections, which also serve as research infrastructure. In addition, the NHM has gained a high profile in the sphere of open science – both in Austria and in Europe.
 
Tangible changes that can also be seen and experienced by visitors will primarily affect the zoological displays, which are about to be remodelled and renovated. Visibility is envisaged also for the botanical collection, and a very intriguing “ice age hall for children” is to be implemented.
 
Further plans for structural measures are designed to reduce the museum’s CO₂ footprint and increase safety.
 
The extremely positive support of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sport (BMKÖS) enables the museum to tackle these major and necessary measures.
 
The management is also pleased to present the NHM’s ambitious exhibition plans 2023 for the museum itself and the Narrenturm as well as further new initiatives.
 
For those interested, a tour on the 1st floor and a glance behind the scenes on the 2nd floor will be offered after the press conference, to offer new perspectives on the evolution and exciting development of our institution.
