On the identity of Bdeogale species.
E. Haring, B. Herzig-Straschil & H. Van Rompey
Members of the African genus Bdeogale
(B. crassicauda, B. jacksoni, B. nigripes) are distributed from Gabon and Cameroon in the west to Kenya and Tanzania in the
east and to Mozambique in the south east. The classification of B. nigripes and B. jacksoni is not quite clear.
Since
the Museum of Natural History in Vienna has some Bdeogale-specimens from the relevant areas and also has a well equipped DNA
laboratory, it was decided to perform a DNA sequence analysis of mitochondrial DNA to elucidate the genetic relationships
and differentiation patterns of the Bdeogale species. Apart from samples of the specimens in our collection, samples from
many other museum collections are being used and we are grateful to the curators of these collections for their cooperation.
