- The changes of species richness, species diversity, species composition, and functional diversity of birds as response to global change;
- Temporal turnover in biodiversity over a century and the consequences for conservation of birds;
- How bird populations respond to avian haemosporidians and to land use change and land use intensification.

My personal teaching interest is mainly focused on conservation biology and global change effects on animals along with the needed methods of monitoring. These are all topics of particular relevance to the position. Furthermore, I can help make the subjects come alive by including interesting examples from my own research.My teaching experience started in 1997. It includes serving as a mentor and instructor in courses during my early student career. Subsequently I was a teaching assistant in various courses at the University of Ulm and at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, both with particular focus on ecology and conservation biology. In addition, I trained conservation biologists and monitoring experts in Southeast Asia.
I supervise PhD students working on: host-vector-parasite interactions in Germany; on biogeography of bulbuls in Southeast Asia; and the spatial interaction of birds and insect pests in the Brazilian landscape. I guide the students to collect adequate data, analyse their data using up-to-date statistical methods, and guide the students to write and defend their theses to a committee. I meet regularly with my students to follow their progress and help with potential problems. I conduct interactive seminars with the students to confirm they have understood relevant concepts and methods.
