ABOL reference data

The aim of the project is to create at least 5,000 DNA barcodes for at least 1,500 species of animals, plants and fungi that occur in Austria. Special focus is on pollinators, soil organisms and aquatic organisms. The taxonomic expertise of Austria's natural history museums, universities and other biodiversity experts (e.g. eco-offices, freelance biologists, lay experts) will be used to generate DNA barcodes. The DNA barcodes will be available open access in the international BOLD database for numerous applications. With this method, species identification can be carried out much more efficiently in nature conservation practice, which means that the increased monitoring requirements (e.g. insect mortality, climate change, biodiversity crisis) can be better managed.
